Conclusion after congress: 'embrace a truly interdisciplinary and inclusive approach to ageing'

The fields of the humanities and arts remain under-represented within ageing research. That is one of the findings in a new publication, based on the content of a gerontology congress last year. The rapidly ageing population in our changing world requires the creation of inclusive, supportive and sustainable societies. According to one of the main authors, SWEAH doctor Isabelle von Saenger, Karoli

They want to create real change with their research

This week, a first workshop was held for SWEAH PhD students who want to learn more about impact, collaborating with actors outside academia and how to reach decision-makers and achieve real change. It is not always easy and it requires structured work, the participants noted. On October 15, SWEAH is arranging a second workshop, when a tool that can facilitate this will be examined in more detail.

Institutional cultures limit the influence of frail older adults'

Frail older adults can participate meaningfully in research and care, when given appropriate methods and support. But institutional cultures often limit their influence and opportunities. That is revealed in a new thesis defended by Roar Hermansen Østby, University of Gothenburg. He is affiliated to SWEAH since 2022 and examines participation, user involvement and frail older adults. How can the re

SWEAH alumni in new joint project

Those who have been PhD students at SWEAH graduate school have built up a broad network during their doctoral studies, and many continue the collaboration between the partner universities as alumni and researchers. Last week, some SWEAH alumni met to write a joint article. They obviously don't want to reveal exactly what it will be about before publication. But they are happy to highlight the rewa

Better control of older adults' everyday activities with AI

New technology can make it easier for older adults to be active, but they must be involved in the development of the technology. This is evident in a new thesis by William Son Galanza, a SWEAH PhD student in the Applied Gerontology research group in Lund, who has developed an AI model that can categorize the everyday activities of older adults. Diabetes drug could protect against low blood sugar

DPP-4 inhibitors are a group of drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes that lower high blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin production in the body. Researchers at Lund University in Sweden have now discovered that DPP-4 inhibitors are also effective against low blood sugar levels. The study, which was carried out on mice, has been published in the journal Diabetologia. “If these inhibitors also

Previously unknown effect of vitamin A identified

Researchers at Lund University in Sweden have identified a previously unknown effect of vitamin A in human embryonic development. Their findings show that vitamin A affects the formation of blood cells. The signal molecule, retinoic acid, is a product of vitamin A which helps to instruct how different types of tissue are to be formed in the growing embryo. For the first time, Professor Niels-Bjarn

Lost genes make fungi dependent on trees

A new research study has shed light on the underground interaction between tree roots and fungi. In order to understand how this important symbiosis came about, an international team of researchers have sequenced the genomes of different fungi that live underground. The study shows that in the course of evolution, the symbiotic fungi have lost many genes present in their free-living ancestors, and

Early signs in young children predict type 1 diabetes

New research shows that it is possible to predict the development of type 1 diabetes. By measuring the presence of autoantibodies in the blood, it is possible to detect whether the immune system has begun to break down the body’s own insulin cells. “In the TEDDY study we have found that autoantibodies often appear during the first few years of life”, said Professor Åke Lernmark from Lund Universit
